FAQ

1.  What comes in a KnitCrate?

Surprise and fiber arts delight!  And, of course, actual fiber artist products (NOT samples): our subscriptions include premium yarn, a pattern as well as “extras” that can be knitting related (e.g., accessories) or more lifestyle-focused (e.g., food, lotions).

The knitting products are from premium brands—some that are well known and others that are newly launched or small and niche.  The “extras” make each KnitCrate that much more delightful!  In short, each KnitCrate will contain the following:

  • A premium yarn by a different company each month (past packages have featured yarns from Three Irish Girls, Be Sweet, Dyeabolical Yarns, Morehouse Farm, Kangaroo Dyer, Artesano Yarns, Cephalopod Yarns, Jill Draper Makes Stuff, and Koigu)
  • A pattern for a surprise project suitable for your subscription level - we sometimes include multiple patterns so you can choose between projects
  • Enough YUMMY yarn to complete the pattern at least once - sometimes twice in different beautiful colorways
  • A sweet or soothing extra to enjoy!
  • A fun extra to love!

For all of our subscribers we work to bring new patterns and yarns from time to time.  For our Indie KnitCrate subscribers we strive to introduce you to exclusive colorways from time to time (as we have done in our January 2013, February 2013, April 2013 and May 2013 Indie KnitCrates).

2. Can't we just pick what comes in our KnitCrate?

Now where’s the fun in that?  Honestly, the value of KnitCrate is not only in the premium products but also in the discovery and surprise. . . the anticipation, not knowing what you’re going to get, the surprise when you find out, and the thrill of learning that yes, you never would’ve tried it yourself, but you can knit that advanced beginner pattern!

Basically, KnitCrate is best enjoyed with an open mind.  However, we know sometimes you want to try something very specific and we don’t want to hold you back from that.  After our reveal for a KnitCrate most often we release a “Kit” or “Past Package” to allow you to do just that.  This is perfect for those of you who are looking for a little more control.

3. Why do KnitCrates include "extras"?

We include “extras” in KnitCrates because while fiber arts products like yarn and patterns are important, it is just one of the many aspects of a happy fiber arts focused life.  Given that one of our goals is to help our customers enjoy their entire fiber arts experience, we feel this mission is best accomplished by including a non-fiber arts related item in a KnitCrate that could sooth them (or their sweet tooth!) during their experience or provide a little extra fun!

4. What is the dollar value of a KnitCrate?

We strongly feel that the value that KnitCrate provides lies in the full breadth of our service and not in the dollar value of the products.  We’ve quickly learned after our launch that one fiber artists’ gold can easily be another’s silver (and vice versa!).  Beauty and quality is a very subjective topic where opinions and feelings carry strong weight.  And that’s exactly why KnitCrate is a valuable service.  The value comes from the ability to try something new, the fun of realizing you love something that you never would have picked for yourself, and the comfort of knowing that all the products have been vetted by KnitCrate.  We ensure you’re getting your money’s worth by guaranteeing quality products from premium vendors and not by adding up the dollar value.

However, if you’re a dollars and cents kind of fiber artist we can say that the dollar value of our KnitCrates has never been below a subscription rate.  Here is a July 2013 blog post we did on a few KnitCrates: click here.

5. Do you offer Gift Subscriptions?

Yes.  You can purchase a 3, 6, 9 or 12 month Knitting (here) Gift subscription and have it shipped monthly to a different location other than your billing address.  We also offer E-Gift Cards (here) for use in our online store.

6. What if I don't like the products I receive?

We would hope this does not happen, however remember you can always share the items your receive with your fellow knitting friends!  Also, please do give us feedback so we can better tailor our packages to our members' likes.

7. I want to buy a previous month’s package, how can I do that?

We used to sell our previous month's packages for an additional charge of $10 plus S&H. However, effective June 4, 2013 due to the continued increasing demand for KnitCrate subscriptions and high number of conversions from Bi-Monthly to Monthly subscriptions we will no longer be offering any "past packages" for sale on any future KnitCrates starting with the June 2013 KnitCrate. Thus, the only way to get a KnitCrate is to be a subscriber or to purchase a Try-A-KnitCrate that we offer from time-to-time (approximately twice per year).

8.  How can I manage my subscription(s)?

We can always help you manage your subscription over the phone or via clicking the red "Help" button at our website. You can also manage many aspects of your subscription through our Billing Portal.

Our Billing Portal makes it easy for you to directly manage your subscriptions:
  • View subscription details: This view includes next billing date, current credit card on file, billing address, shipping address, and more.
  • Add or update your credit card on file: Sometimes a credit card gets lost or is nearing expiration. This link allows you to easily update your information so you don’t miss any KnitCrate deliveries.
  • Cancel subscriptions:  Sometimes things change and, as much as it hurts to see KnitCraters go, a subscription needs to be cancelled.  We want to make this an easy and painless process so we’ve added a feature allowing cancellations from the Billing Portal.
  • View Statements and invoices:  Our statements are easy-to-follow in the Billing Portal!  In addition, you can easily download PDFs of your statements and invoices for your records.
  • Access: You can access your subscription account via a short-lived link (URLs) that we can email you.  As long as you have quick access to your email account (and who doesn’t these days?) you’ll be able to quickly access and log in to your subscription account.  Once logged in you remain authenticated in a seamless way.  We emailed all existing KnitCraters their login link on October 5, 2013 and all new subscribers after that date will recieve their link when they first subscribe. If you have any issues then you can contact us at info@KnitCrate.com.
  • Add-ons: Any KnitCrate Add-ons (e.g., Minis, Sock) will be reflected on your Statements but not on your main Billing Portal page.

Please note that if you have multiple subscriptions (e.g., a Bi-monthly Indie and a Bi-monthly Sock subscription with deliveries staggered on alternate months) then EACH SUBSCRIPTION payment will result in a different link sent. Thus, if you need to update any information (e.g., shipping details), then please update BOTH subscriptions to avoid any issues.

Also, Gift Subscriptions are one-time purchases. Thus, the Billing Portal does not include management of any Gift Subscriptions.

1. When can I expect my first shipment?

Unless we notify you that your subscription has not been accepted, you will receive your first KnitCrate package the month (for Monthly and Gift subscribers) or second month (for Bi-Monthly subscribers) following your subscription date.

After you subscribe we'll email you (usually within 24 hours) to let you know whether your subscription has been accepted or that we are oversubscribed (in which case we'll either offer you a past package or you can skip a month to get on track).  Your first KnitCrate will ship as follows:
  • any accepted new monthly subscription paid before the last day of the prior month will receive that month's package.  So if you paid for a monthly subscription on any day in December 2012 you would receive the January 2013 box if accepted.
  • any accepted new bi-monthly subscription paid before the last day of the prior two months will receive that month's package.  So if you paid for a monthly subscription on any day in November 2012 you would receive the January 2013 box if accepted and then a package every other month so long as your subscription continues.

2. Where does KnitCrate ship to? And how?

KnitCrate is available to fiber artists in all countries.  Packages will be sent via USPS and we will not alter our shipping arrangements barring an extreme circumstance (e.g., interruption of USPS service that results in our need to temporarily use an alternate shipping service such as FedEx or UPS).  Please note that packages may be sent in a box or a mailer.

3. When will my KnitCrate ship?

Each KnitCrate package will ship approximately mid-month of the month you are to receive a delivery, but we may ship some packages earlier or later depending on our vendor's delivery schedules.

4. Will I be able to track my shipment?

We will send an email with tracking information for orders once your KnitCrate package has shipped.

5. What if I want to change my address?

Pleasecontact usfor any customer service issues, including change of customer information.

6. What is your shipping policy? Do you offer free shipping?

Yes!  All subscriptions include free shipping and handling.  All pricing is reflected on the applicable order page before you add the item to your cart or place your order.

7.  How much does shipping cost for products sold on your site?

Shipping and handling is free for all orders over $200 (we offer free shipping on certain products from time to time).  Orders below $200 will incur a shipping and handling fee based on real-time USPS carrier rates.  All KnitCrate subscription packages ship for free.

1. When will I be billed for the monthly recurring Subscription?

You will be billed according to your sign up date. For example, if you subscribe up on the 10th of the month then your monthly charge will be on the 10th of each month.

3. What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel your Monthly or Bi-Monthly subscription at any time.  Keep in mind you are billed one month in advance, therefore upon your cancellation, you will still receive a final package in the mail if applicable or a store credit if only a partial package was paid for (e.g., bi-monthly subscription).  Gift subscriptions cannot be cancelled.  Please note that if you cancel your subscription and you later decide to renew, then you are not guaranteed a subscription if our list is closed.  You will need to join our waitlist until we re-open our subscriptions.

Although we would not like to see any subscriber go, we do make cancellation easy.  Just contact us and we'll cancel your subscription.

4. What is your return policy?

We accept returns on non-sale individual items for which a promo code was not used.  Simply mail back the unused items you would like to return within 30 days of receipt in the product's original packaging and labels to the return address on your package.  Please include a note, call or send us an email describing your reason for returning the items.  Return products must be unused and in the original packaging.  We can exchange the item, credit your card less a $5 restocking fee or provide an in-store credit.  We will not, however, be able to refund your shipping costs.  We do not accept any returns after a knitting subscription package has been paid for or shipped.  This is the only way we can order from our vendors in quantities sufficient to provide you with such great value!  If you do not like an item in your subscription package, then you can always gift it to a fellow knitter!

5. Do you save my credit card information so that it is more convenient for me when I order?

No.  All payment information is handled through PayPal (whether you choose to pay through our site or link through PayPal at checkout), therefore KnitCrate is not privy to your credit card number.  This is also the reason we do not take any orders over the phone.

7.  How Is Sales Tax Calculated?

KnitCrate LLC is currently obligated to collect sales tax on orders shipped to New York addresses.  Each state's tax laws specify what purchases are subject to sales tax.  The total at checkout is only an estimate.  The final total that will include sales tax for orders shipped to New York will be reflected on your invoice and will include state and local taxes.
