Steven Berg a.k.a. “The Glitter Knitter”

He dresses like a rock star, adorned with a self-designed sweater made from cassette tapes, leather pants and eye-catching jewelry!  He describes himself as “loud and brassy”.  Talk to Steven Berg and you’ll soon discover his life-long passion….KNITTING.

His educational background extends from MCAD, to Parsons in New York culminating with The Fashion Institute of Technology.

His design career, has brought him to all corners of the world. From designing fabrics in Hong Kong to consulting for Versace in Milan, Bill Blass in Montreal, and the urban Stacy Adams in Miami. His one-of-a-kind designs have also made him a hit with the A lister's of Hollywood, from Jennifer Aniston, to Mischa Barton, and many more…  Quoting the master himself, “there are no mistakes, only variations.”

Steven has brought his true passion for fiber arts back home to Minneapolis Minnesota. He is the owner of the Yarn Garage in a circa 1911 Victorian building and his new venue StevenBe in a turn of the century restored firehouse which is his own personal Mecca for all his creations and innovations. Nadine Curtis

Nadine founded Be Sweet in 2003 while living in Cape Town, South Africa. Her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for socially conscious programs served as a catalyst for turning her fascination with local hand-made accessories into a thriving business that supports artisans in developing countries. Be Sweet, a company with a conscience, has a mission. To bring socially and environmentally friendly products to fashionable consumers, products that evoke an individual style and help support community development around the world. Says Nadine: “I want to remind people to literally be sweet and to show compassion for your neighbors and those less fortunate.”

Be Sweet works with several job creation programs in developing countries who give artisans the confidence and the means to support themselves and their families in an otherwise economically depressed region. The programs in South Africa have grown to include over 200 villagers, mostly female members of the Xhosa Tribe who live in the Western and Eastern Cape regions. Program participants are responsible for making yarns, knits, accessories and more.

Be Sweet began with Nadine wholesaling a handful of handmade items from South Africa to boutiques in the United States. Be Sweet’s specialty yarns and wearable accessories can now be found in over 300 stores and boutiques in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and Japan as well as online.  Be Sweet donates a portion of its profits to an educational support NGO program in Cape Town called Bright Start.  New developments for the Be Sweet team in 2013 include a new e-commerce retail platform and showroom in Mill Valley, California celebrating newly found lifestyle products and yarns.  Get your own Be Sweet lifestyle products and yarns with the KnitCrate Limited Edition: StevenBe Box - join the waitlist here.
