June 2018 Membership Crate Crochet Tips & Tricks

My name is Julie, and I am a crochet designer & instructor. Im excited by the Knitcrate “Ice Scream themed Membership Crate for June 2018, because it includes a WEARABLE crochet project! I got the yarn in Smacker, the red, but that yellow is stunning!

I rarely get this excited by patterns, but when I saw the Lemoncello poncho, I wound up my yarn, got my hook and started on the instructions. And I simply didnt understand what I was seeing. Nx? Ss? It took longer than I care to admit for me to put the hook down and actually go back and READ. Patterns include a lot of info even before they start so read through.

I love that this pattern includes a chart, or stitch diagram. These are very helpful once youre used to them, but can be intimidating at first. If youre a visual person, youll find you prefer patterns with diagrams alongside the written instructions. Plus their language is mostly universal so French, Japanese, and American designers all use the same stitch key! You can work patterns in languages you dont even speak!

Do you block your crochet pieces? Do you know what blocking is? Blocking is a crucial last step to take your crochet pieces from lovely to stunning. Blocking allows your stitches to open up and stretch out making them look their very best. There are different methods of blocking out there, but in this months crochet pattern, the designer instructs us to steam block. Steam blocking is done with an iron that features a steam setting, and that you hold above your piece. Its almost magic.

Enjoy your finished pieces!
