Designer Programs

At KNITCRATE, we know that designing patterns can take on a wide variety of forms. Maybe you do this full time, part time, or on the side. We admire your style and want to work with you in a way that works for you and benefits you best.  That’s why we have developed 4 unique programs to partner with independent designers!  You can participate in one of them or all of them.  It’s up to you!

1. KNITCRATE Exclusive Collection Program

Exclusive Designs

Several times a year, KNITCRATE will be seeking exclusive designs inspired by a theme or a certain yarn for upcoming collections.  Designers will be provided with a mood board and yarn support.  If we are collaborating in one of our exclusive collections, designers are given a fixed fee ranging between $300 - $500 for each design, based on size, complexity, and technique.

KNITCRATE retains the rights to distribute the pattern in our own formatting in perpetuity (allowing us to feature it in collections and e-book bundles and other formats). KNITCRATE may republish the design for sale on its site, other sites, publications, or publish it for free.

2. KNITCRATE Collaboration in a Monthly Crate

Designers who create new, exclusive content for one of our Monthly Crates will benefit from our wide customer base and audience. Your patterns will be featured in the agreed-upon month, then sold in our online web shop and Ravelry store.

Designers who collaborate with us in a Monthly Crate, have two programs to choose from:

Flat Fee Program: We pay all our designers a higher fixed rate for collaborating in one of our monthly crates. All patterns created for KnitCrate are exclusive to and owned by KnitCrate during and after the collaboration month (see payment schedule below).

Or

Royalty Program: We pay all our designers a lower up front fixed rate for collaborating in one of our monthly crates, and then pay a royalty for every time the pattern is sold afterward, whether in our Shop or Ravelry page. All patterns created for KnitCrate are exclusive to and owned by KnitCrate during and after the collaboration month. Although the patterns become a part of the KnitCrate library, you will still be compensated for any future sales it may have (see payment schedule below).

Payment Schedule for Collaboration in one of our Monthly Crates:

Flat Fee Structure: If we are collaborating in one of our monthly crates, designers are given a fixed fee during the month of collaboration ranging between $300 - $500, based on size, complexity, technique, and number of designs. There are a few different options for how many designs can be featured:

  • Design 1 knitting/crochet pattern for a KNITCRATE Crate or collection
  • Design 2 knitting/crochet patterns for a KNITCRATE crate or collection (1 Intermediate Advanced skill level + 1 Easier skill level)
  • Design more than 2 knitting/crochet patterns in a given month for a KNITCRATE crate or collection.

Your pattern receives a jump-start through being featured in one of our KNITCRATE monthly crates, which will help bump it up in the Ravelry listings and generate interest and sales. We provide photography, technical editing, and layout for the pattern on Ravelry, through our site, and in the shipment (if applicable). We ask that designers who work with us are willing to provide friendly pattern support to the customers that use their patterns, and, if they feel so inclined, are welcome to participate in the KNITCRATE forums and get to know our customers.

KNITCRATE retains the rights to distribute the pattern in our own formatting in perpetuity (allowing us to feature it in collections and e-book bundles and other formats). KNITCRATE may republish the design for sale on its site, other sites, publications, or publish it for free.

Royalty Structure: If we are collaborating in one of our monthly crates under the Royalty Structure, designers are given a lower fixed fee during the month of collaboration ranging between $150 - $275 for each design, based on size, complexity, and technique.

  • 60% of Ravelry sales of your pattern
  • 60% of your pattern sales through our site
  • And 60% of your pattern portions of kits through our site, collections, and/or e-book bundles

    3. Yarn Support Program

We know that some designers prefer to retain more rights and sell patterns themselves, and we are willing to work with you there, too!  Under this program, Designers receive 100% of the pattern sale price and retain full rights to their designs.  We take no commission or fees, even if the pattern is sold on our website.  You can choose to sell your pattern with your own formatting, photos, and editing via sites like Ravelry, Patternfish, Etsy, Love Knitting, or through your own website.

We are looking for patterns in any KNITCRATE branded yarn that are interesting and unique. Please note that, for Yarn Support Program, we will only accept patterns that are shown in KNITCRATE branded yarns and have a KNITCRATE branded yarn as the sole yarn listed in the pattern and on Ravelry.

KNITCRATE retains the rights to distribute the pattern in our own formatting in perpetuity (allowing us to feature it in collections and e-book bundles), in which case you will get a percentage of sales commensurate to the percentage of patterns represented in the collection, pursuant to the original rights agreement. No party - either the designer or KNITCRATE - may republish the design for free without the written consent of both parties.

As the designer, the pattern is ALWAYS credited to you and you retain the creative rights to your ideas.

Designers are responsible for having each pattern tech edited and tested prior to final submission to KNITCRATE.

Designers will receive payment each quarter (January, April, July, and October within 15 days of the end of the quarter) in the following amounts:

    • 100% of your pattern sales through our site
    • 100% of your pattern portions of kits through our site, collections, and/or e-book bundles

Designers are also responsible for submitting photography files to KNITCRATE for use in our layout and formatting, and a non-locked copy of the pattern to allow us to format it for collections and e-book bundles. Photography needs to be high resolution (300 dpi). If it is beyond the means of the designer to do photography, we may be interested in working out an arrangement to piggyback on our in-house photography and a royalty on sales until costs are recouped.

    How to submit your Proposal:

You can upload your pattern proposals using our Pattern Submission Form.

    Summary of Yarn Support Program:

    • You receive 100% of the pattern sale price and retain full rights to your design; we take no commission or fees
    • You receive 100% of pattern sale portion of kits in perpetuity even if sold on KNITCRATE website

    • Yarn support covered completely by KNITCRATE
