Canada Pension Plan for Canadian Retirees

The full CPP benefits can be claimed at the age of 65 years and additional benefits if claimed till the age of 70 years while contributing. Any contributor who claims before 65 years will only receive partial benefits based on the number of their contributions made while claiming these benefits.

For instance, if any contributor claims the CPP benefits at the age of 60 years then the amount received will be subject to reduction of up to 36% in their full CPP benefits. CPP Eligibility Criteria

  • The claimant needs to have been employed or earning within the territories of Canada while contributing towards the CPP fund;
  • The claimant needs to have made at least one valid contribution towards the CPP fund;
  • The claimant needs to have attained the age of 60 years while claiming the CPP benefits;
  • The claimant can earn these valid CPP contributions either from the monthly income or in the form of credits from the respective spouse or common-law partner when separated.

Old Age Security for Senior Canadian Citizens

The beneficiaries can start receiving their benefits right from the month of attaining the age of 65 years or any specific date after that. The additional delay after attaining the age of 65 years in claiming OAS benefits results in increased amount for monthly payments. The beneficiary can delay the OAS pension benefits by up to 60 months and for each month the amount will be incremented accordingly. Therefore, if a person claims the OAS benefits at the age of 70 years will receive the maximum monthly pension.

However, the choice of delaying the OAS benefits is entirely up to the requirement and convenience of the beneficiary. OAS Eligibility Criteria

  • The beneficiary needs to be either a Canadian citizen or a legally permitted Canadian resident;
  • The beneficiary needs to have resided within the Canadian territories for a minimum duration of 10 years after attaining the age of 18 years.

The OAS eligibility criteria, for Canadians currently residing outside of Canada, are as follows:

  • The beneficiary needs to have attained at least the age of 65 years;
  • The beneficiary had been either a Canadian citizen or a legally permitted Canadian resident on the day he or she left Canada;
  • The beneficiary needs to have resided within the Canadian territories for a minimum duration of 20 years after attaining the age of 18 years.

Expected CPP and OAS Pension Increase coming in 2025

The CPP and OAS Pension boost benefits are expected to increase periodically, i.e. CPP on an annual basis and OAS on a quarterly basis. The CPP benefits have already been revised in January 2025 and the OAS benefits are scheduled to be revised in April 2025.
