Important Safety Note:
Unlike food coloring, which is developed with food safety in mind, commercial acid dyes are developed for dyeing fiber with a goal of permanence over time and to last through washing and wearing, otherwise known as light fastness and wash fastness. With commercial acid dyes, there are additional safety measures that must be taken to use them safely.
The best way to know what steps to take when using commercial acid dyes is to read the instructions on the container or on the manufacturer's website.
With this series, we will be using Jacquard Powdered Acid Dyes, which, according to the Jacquard website, may be harmful if inhaled and can be very irritating to the eyes and lungs. We highly recommend that you wear a respirator mask and eye protection whenever handling dye powders. It is also very important to have a set of dedicated dye equipment such as pots, pans, measuring tools, and any other preferred tool that are used only for dyeing and not used for food. In addition to the mentioned safety precautions, please keep dye powders away from children and pets at all times.
